Two NJU achievements win China's top sci-tech Award

On July 8, two research projects led by Nanjing University have won the following top national sci-tech awards: team led by Professor Wan Xiangang from the School of Physics won the Second Prize of the State Natural Science Award; team led by Professor Jiang Qing from the Medical School, won the Second Prize of the State Scientific and Technological Progress Award.


Second Prize, the State Natural Science Award:

Theory of Topological Semimetals and Computational Prediction of Topological Materials

Professors Wan Xiangang and his collaborators have accomplished pioneering research work with global influence in proposing topological concepts and predicting topological materials. Together with his partners, he put forward a new type of topological quantum state—the Weyl semimetal, which is widely recognized to have sparked an international research boom in this field. The team developed efficient theoretical methods for identifying topological properties, predicted more than ten thousand topological materials, and built a topological materials database. This achievement, alongside parallel research conducted by the Institute of Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, was listed among 2019 China's Top 10 Scientific and Technological Progresses. The discoveries made by the team carry profound scientific significance for the study of topological states and topological materials.

Second Prize of the State Scientific and Technological Progress Award:

New Paradigm of Intelligent Medical Care for Osteoarticular Diseases and R&D & Application of Innovative Medical Devices

Led by Professor Jiang Qing, the team has carried out long-term key research on the full-cycle intelligent intervention theory for osteoarticular diseases, intelligent R&D and manufacturing technologies of osteoarticular products, and clinical translation, yielding remarkable economic and social benefits.

The onset of osteoarticular diseases usually severely disrupts patients' daily lives and imposes a heavy burden on their quality of life as well as social economy. Therefore, breakthroughs in basic research, intervention theories, clinical diagnosis and treatment technologies, and medical devices targeting osteoarticular diseases constitute a major national strategic demand oriented toward safeguarding people's life and health.
