Arrhythmia Device R&D Base of the National Innovation Center for Advance Medical Devices established at NJU

On October 19, 2025, the inauguration ceremony for the "Nanjing University R&D Branch of the National Innovation Center for Advance Medical Devices and the Arrhythmia Device R&D Base of the National Innovation Center for Advance Medical Devices" and the strategic symposium on the Developmemnt of Domestic Arrhythmia Device were held on Xianlin Campus. Lu Yanqing, Vice President of NJU, Liu Xin, Chairman of the National Innovation Center for Advance Medical Devices, Shi Shengfeng, Vice President of the Chinese Medical Doctor Association, Yu Chenggong, President of Nanjing Drum Tower Hospital, the Affliated Hospital of NJU Medical School, Zhang Shu, Director of the Arrhythmia Technology Branch of China Association of Medical Equipment, attended the ceremony and delivered speeches. Zheng Hairong, Vice President of NJU and Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, attended the symposium.

Lu Yanqing pointed out that the National Innovation Center for Advance Medical Devices has been established to solve the "bottleneck" issues of high-end devices and achieve self-reliance and control over technology. This strategy not only indicates the direction for industrial development but also provides important opportunities for universities to deeply integrate into national strategic scientific and technological forces. He stated that the launch of the R&D Base is an important milestone for NJU in serving major national strategies and deeply integrating into the Healthy China initiative. NJU will take this as a new starting point, adhere to the "Four Orientations," and contribute wisdom and strength to the independent innovation of high-end medical devices.

Yu Chenggong stated that clinical needs are the source of innovation, and overcoming device "bottleneck" problems is a doctor's duty. Drum Tower Hospital will fully supporting the construction of the R&D Base, precisely connecting clinical needs with technical breakthroughs through systematic mechanisms, and bravely taking on the role of "first user and first examiner" of innovative domestic devices to promote the implementation of innovative achievements that benefit patients.

Liu Xin stated that the the National Innovation Center for Advance Medical Devices focuses on major needs in prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation, concentrating on core directions such as high-end medical imaging, advanced treatment, and implantable devices, and has established six innovation sub-centers nationwide. With the strong promotion of Academician Zheng Hairong, the seventh sub-center has been established, which is also the only arrhythmia device R&D center in the country. The addition of this R&D base has injected new vitality into the the National Innovation Center for Advance Medical Devices.

Zhang Shu stated that most arrhythmia diseases rely on device treatment, and these devices have long been dependent on imports. The launch of the Arrhythmia Device R&D Base represents the possibility of breaking import dependency and overcoming "bottleneck" problems in the future.

Shi Shengfeng pointed out that the Chinese Medical Doctor Association highly values and actively promotes "medical-engineering integration" and cross-disciplinary exchanges, encouraging clinical doctors to engage in technological innovation and achievement transformation based on practical needs. He stated that the Association will fully support the construction of the R&D base and expects the platform to effectively connect the entire innovation chain, significantly enhancing China's independent innovation capability and core competitiveness in this field.

Liu Xin announced the organizational structure and the list of expert committee and technical committee members of the Arrhythmia Device R&D Base, indicating that medical equipment is currently moving toward digitalization and intelligence, with tracks such as "AI + precision medicine" becoming key directions.

Xu Wei, Director of the R&D Base, gave an inaugural speech, and Ping Lichuan, CEO of Suzhou Wushuang Medical Equipment Co., Ltd. and Deputy Director of R&D Base, announced the five core tasks of the R&D Base.

During the event, participants attended two strategic seminars on the development of domestic CIED devices and atrial fibrillation diagnostic and treatment devices. Zheng Hairong  exchanged with the guests on relevant matters, proposing new thoughts and perspectives for the strategic development of domestic arrhythmia treatment.

Professor Xu Wei from the Arrhythmia Center of Drum Tower Hospital presided over the inaugurate ceremony. This event was jointly organized by National Innovation Center for Advance Medical Devices, Nanjing University, and Drum Tower Hospital, with the cooperation of Nanjing University Education Development Foundation. Top experts in the field of arrhythmia nationwide, academic leaders from high-level scientific research institutions, and heads of research and development from leading medical device enterprises attended the meeting.
