冯端


    基本简介

    著名固体物理学家。浙江绍兴人,1923年4月27日生于江苏苏州。现任南京大学固体物理研究所所长、教授、博士生导师。他于1942年考入中央大学理学院物理系,1946年7月毕业,获学士学位并留校任教。1949年该校更名为南京大学后,历任物理系助教、讲师、副教授、教授及固体物理研究所所长,其间,1984—1988年任南京大学研究生院院长,1985年起任固体微结构物理国家重点实验室主任兼学术委员会主任。他于1980年11月当选为中国科学院数学物理学部学部委员。1980年当选中国科学院院士,1993年当选为第三世界科学院院士。

    他在凝聚态物理领域特别是晶体缺陷研究方面做了大量开拓性的工作,澄清了金属和氧化物晶体中缺陷的组态和起源,开辟了非线性光学晶体微结构化新领域。

    业绩评价

    冯端,1923年生于江苏苏州。1946年毕业于中央大学物理系,获理学士学位 并留校任教。1952年任南京大学物理系讲师,1963年提任副教授,1978年晋升为 教授,后任博士生导师,1979年当选为中国科学院学部委员(后改称院士),1980 年起任南京大学固体物理研究所所长,1984年至1988年被任命为南京大学研究生 院第一任院长,1985年起任国家固体微结构物理实验室主任兼学术委员会主任, 1992年起任中国科学院数理学部常委兼副主任。

    冯端教授还历任国家自然科学基金委员会委员,国务院学位委员会物理学科 评议组召集人,《物理学进展》主编,《固体物理学大辞典》主编,《凝聚态物 理学丛书》副主编,江苏省科协主席,中国物理学会常务理事。

    冯端教授是我国固体物理学泰斗,著名物理学家。他开拓了我国晶体缺陷的 研究领域,发现浸蚀法位错所成像规律,并用来探明晶体中的位错组态和亚晶界 的位错结构,取得许多重大成果,特别是有关畴界的研究成果,受到国内外专家 的重视。因此,他于1992年担任国有攀登“纳米材料科学”首席科学家。

    冯端教授在科学研究方向的成就是举世瞩目的。不仅硕果累累,而且不断有新的突破,他的科研成果中有许多具有世界先进水平。他在科研工作中高瞻远瞩, 勇于开拓,既立足于国家需要和自身条件,又瞄准世界科技发展前沿,精心谋划, 精心组织,实现了一个又一个飞跃。

    以位错为对象的晶体缺陷理论虽然在20世纪30年代即已问世,但直至50年代 获得位错存在的直接证据以后,位错理论与实验研究才有长足的进展。然而因受国际上某一思潮的影响,国内学术界一直未敢涉足。冯端冲破重重阻力,毅然带领几个年轻人闯入这一领域。他选择了我国产量丰富而尖端技术极为需要的钼、钨、铌等体心立方难熔金属为突破口,开始了晶体缺陷的研究。难熔金属熔点很 高,单晶体制备极困难。他借鉴国防上刚问世的电子轰击熔炼技术,组织设计并研制成功了我国第一台电子束浮区区熔仪,成功地制出了钼、钨单晶体。没有了电子显微镜等先进的研究工具,他便因陋就简,改进传统技术,发展了能显示位错类型、组态、亚晶界位错结构和位错滑移动力学等方面取得了独创性结果,在1966年北京国际物理学会讨论会上获得普遍好评。这一成就极大地鼓舞了国内同行,从而为国内开辟晶体缺陷研究领域作出了重大贡献。1974年,为配合国家激光事业发展的需要,冯端教授毅然开辟新方向,对激光与非线性光学晶体开展广泛研究。他在发展应力双折射貌相、X射线衍射貌相、 电子显微镜观测技术和成象理论的基础上,系统研究了晶体中位错、铁电畴、铁弹畴、弯晶界、生长条纹、生长区界面、包裹体等缺陷的类型、分布、及其起源, 提出了在晶体生长和后处理中避免和控制缺陷的方案,有效地提高了晶体质量和 器件性能。在相变物理方面,发现了铁电相变点附近多种特征微畴结构,以及霜些晶体中通过畴界成核、增殖、运动或畴界拓宽实现相变温度的现象。这些为了解预相变的结构变化特征和缺陷在相变中行为提供了直观信息,对发展铁电相变 的微观理论具有重要意义。因而在1989年第一届国际畴结构会议上作为特邀报告得到国际同行的高度重视。以上关于难熔金属和复杂氧化物晶体中缺陷研究的成果,以“晶体缺陷的研究”为题获得1982年国家自然科学二等奖。

    此后,冯端教授把迈进的目标放在凝聚态物理学与材料科学汇合处。从研究微结构出发,朝人工控制微结构来获得性能优异的新型材料方面发展。提出了80年代研究工作的主攻方向:从原子、分子水平上研究不同层次、不同类型固体微结构的组态、分布、相互作用以及形成与转变规律,阐明微结构对各种物理性能的影响,在此基础上进行材料的分子及微结构和优异性能的新型材料。这一构想获得了国家的重视和支持。1984年投资建立了南京大学固体微结构物理实验室, 成为我国第一批国家重点实验室和第一批国内外开放的实验室。几年来,在冯端教授提出的“边建设,边研究,边开放”的方针指导下,已经取得了许多高水平 的研究成果。如前所述,畴的存在影响非线性光学晶体的倍频效率,在冯端教授指导下,人为引进周期性分布的畴界,制成多种聚片多畴晶体,巧妙地利用准位 相匹配的物理效应,在国际上首次获得了接近理论值的倍频增强效应。从而奠定非线性光学晶体微结构化的基础。在冯端指导下,实验室其他同志还对多种非传统材料,如多种超晶格材料、离子簇、超细微粒、磁性液体、铁电液晶等领域开展研究工作,取得了可喜的结果。1986年,发现高临界温度超导体以后,冯端教授立即组织骨干力量,对其结构、缺陷和相变进行了全面研究,利用高分辨电镜术获得了钇钡铜氧超导体中有序空位的间接象,发现其位错沿攀移面分解的证据, 观测了铋锶钙铜氧超导体的多种非公度调制结构,a—b互换造成的扭转界面,确证了铊钡铜氧超导体中存在的一种新型面缺陷。

    由冯端教授创建的南京大学固体微结构物理实验室,以其选题的先进性、充分的开放度、健全的管理制度和高水平的研究成果,获得了国内学术界的一致赞誉。在1989年由国家科委主持及1990年由国家计委主持的两次全国重点实验室评估中,连续两次荣登榜首。1990年,全国重点实验室工作会议上又被评为先进集体,冯端亦被评为先进个人。冯端教授在长期教学和科研实践的基础上,汇集了自己的渊博知识和国内外最新科技成果,潜心著述,撰写并出版、发表了多部专著和100 多篇中外学术论文。60年代初,由他主持编写的《金属物理》上、下册,为国内该领域的第一部 专著。80年代中期,冯端将此书全面改写并更名为《金属物理学》。该书自成体系,取材新颖,密切沟通凝聚态物理学和材料科学。由于以基础物理问题为主要线索,将材料的具体行为作为实例贯穿其中,使其适应性超过了传统金属物理学范围,成为这一领域国际上的第一部专著,受到广大物理学工作者的普遍欢迎。 此外,他还与许顺生合作,主编了《X射线衍射貌相学》。近年来, 冯端在整个凝聚态物理学领域孜孜不倦地学习、进取。在陆续发表了《凝聚态物理学的回顾与展望》、《凝聚态物理学的新发展》等一系列评述性论文,纲领性地总结了凝聚态物理学发展方向以后,他意识到当前凝聚态物理学的发展已经超出原有固体物理学的范式,需要探索和建立新的范式。根据这一体会,目前开设了两门研究生新课—“凝聚态物理学导论”与“凝聚态物理学新论”,并撰写了《凝聚态物理学新论》,这一专著已于1992年出版。后来,获得了学术界的好评,并获1995年国家教委优秀教材一等奖。当前正与合作者积极从事撰述一本《凝聚态物理学 》的专著。

    由于冯端教授知识渊博,学术造诣精深,学术思想新颖活跃,他的学术报告受到国内外同行的赞赏。国内许多高校、科研单位和学术组织邀请他去讲学和作学术报告。他的学术报告取材新颖,内容丰富,据理得当,深入浅出,融会贯通,受到学术界的好评。例如,1985年暑假,冯端教授应邀去苏州在全国工科物理教学研讨会上他学术报告,题目是:《谈谈熵的概念》。这篇报告受到了当时与会者的一致好评。为了扩大影响,会务组整理了他的报告,后刊登在国家教委主编的《工科物理》杂志上。随后写出和出版了《熵》这本优秀科普著作。又如在从事凝聚态物理学教材编著中,又写出了《晶态面面观》及《放眼晶态之外》这二本科普著作,获得了学术界的好评。
