Professor Xinhua Wu is a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Technology and Engineering (ATSE). She currently serves as Chair Professor and Director of the Institute for Metallic Materials and Intelligent Manufacturing at Soochow University (China). She has long been engaged in research in materials science and engineering. In 2006, she was promoted to Professor in the Department of Metallurgy and Materials at the University of Birmingham (UK), becoming the first female professor in the department’s 103-year history. In 2019, she became Deputy Vice Chancellor of Monash University (Australia), the only ethnic Chinese female deputy vice chancellor among the world’s top 100 universities. She has served on the Fellowship Selection Committee of ATSE and was named a Distinguished Woman Scientist by the Australian Academy of Science’s Learned Academies Forum. Professor Wu is widely recognised as one of the pioneers and leaders in the field of metal additive manufacturing (3D printing). She serves on the editorial boards of multiple international journals. She has published 210 SCI indexed papers (including over 90 fundamental studies on 3D printing), with 15,038 citations, an h index of 66, holds 25 international and 6 Chinese patents, and has authored 5 monographs. She has supervised over 130 doctoral students and postdoctoral researchers. She has delivered more than 40 keynote speeches at international conferences and has been invited to present at major aerospace companies including Boeing, GE, Safran, and Airbus. She serves on the editorial boards of Materials & Design, Powder Metallurgy, and other leading journals. Professor Wu’s team has successfully translated metal 3D printing from scientific concept to industrial manufacturing, achieving pioneering research spanning from the atomic scale to fully formed components. Their outcomes have been applied in aero engines, aircraft, gas turbines, and nuclear power, with sustained product deliveries in the highly demanding civil aviation sector, along with a series of breakthrough solutions. Prof Wu has been awarded numerous national and international honors, including 2024: Jiangsu Province Dengfeng Program Outstanding Talent Award; 2022: Member of the Order of Australia (AM) – for distinguished service to manufacturing science, higher education, and engineering; the second Chinese Australian woman to receive this honour; 2021: AGM Michell Medal for Excellence and Contribution, Engineers Australia (highest award); 2017: Vice Chancellor’s Award for Research Enterprise, Monash University; 2016: BHERT Best Research Translation Award (Business/Higher Education Round Table, Australia); 2015: Dean’s Award for Research Impact (Economic and Social), Monash University; 2014: Fellow, Australian Academy of Technology and Engineering; 2014: Safran First Prize for Innovation and Jury’s Award; 2009: Harvey Flower International Titanium Award, IOM3 (UK).
