Dirk Smit is a theoretical physicist, geoscientist, technology leader and entrepreneur working at the interface of industry, academia and energy systems innovation. After completing a PhD in mathematical physics at Utrecht University, and postdoctoral research at UC Berkeley and Harvard, he joined Shell in 1992 and went on to build a distinguished international career spanning subsurface science, research leadership and corporate innovation strategy. Over more than three decades at Shell, he held a series of senior global roles, including Chief Geophysicist for Shell UK, Vice President Exploration Research, Vice President Research Strategy, Chief Scientist for Geophysics, and ultimately Shell's first Corporate Chief Scientist (Chief Science Officer), advising the Executive Committee and Board on science, technology and innovation. His work combined deep technical expertise with large-scale organisational leadership, including responsibility for major R&D portfolios, international research teams, and long-term industry-university partnerships. Dirk is now Visiting Professor of Practice in the Department of Earth Sciences at the University of Oxford in the UK and a Fellow of the Earth Resources Laboratory at MIT in the US. He is co-founder of GeoRedox, a company focused on stimulated geologic hydrogen production. He also advises companies and investors like Azimuth Capital Management on energy technology, subsurface resources and the design of investable net-zero energy systems. His contributions range from mathematical methods for seismic imaging and advances in gravity gradiometry to energy transition strategy, carbon storage and geologic hydrogen. He has a strong record of translating science into practice through patents, new ventures and technologies deployed at scale, and is widely recognized for connecting first-principles science with real industrial application. He is a Fellow of the American Physical Society and of the Dutch National Academy of Engineering, and recipient of the Ludwig Mintrop Award in Geophysics. Alongside his scientific and entrepreneurial work, he has been deeply committed to education and talent development, including the creation of major doctoral training programmes in Europe and China. Dirk is a frequent speaker on energy systems, subsurface natural resources and the role of science and engineering in the energy transition.
