Collaborative Innovation Center of Solid-State Lighting and Energy-Saving Electronics is led by Nanjing University, mainly participated by Institute of Semiconductors, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Peking University, Tsinghua University, and China Solid State Lighting Alliance, and co-sponsored by 11 units including Nanjing University of Technology, the Suzhou Institute of Nano-tech and Nano-bionics (SINANO), The 55th Research Institute of China Electronics Technology Group Corporation, Nanjing, Jiangsu Nata Opto-electronic Material Co., Ltd, Nanjing Handson Company Limited etc. The Center includes key universities, research institutes and major business players in this technical field in Jiangsu Province, covering whole technology chain of the industry. Thus, the Center is formed through powerful combination and complementary advantages.
The center has integrated the common laboratories, professional laboratories and administrative rooms of all the major participating agencies. The total area of existing buildings is about 50,000 square meters, including Key Laboratory of Optoelectronic Materials (Nanjing University) Institute of Semiconductors (Chinese Academy of Sciences), Center for Wide Band Gap Semiconductors and National Key Laboratory of Micro/Nano Fabrication Technology (Peking University), National Institute of Information Science and Technology Laboratory (in preparation, Tsinghua University), etc. The Center integrates a number of advanced material fabrication platform and a lots of world-class level instruments and equipment, of which more than 10 with values over 10 million CNY, the total value is over 300 million CNY. During the construction of the Center, 8,000 square meters laboratories for technology transfer has been put up in the Nanjing Xingang base.
The Center has set up six technical innovation platforms (key basic source materials, advanced epitaxial technology, high-quality chip and intelligent high-efficiency driving technology, high-power packaging technology, new application core technology, advanced energy-saving electronic device technology) and Standard Research and Technology Extension Platform to achieve the optimal efficiency of scientific research and high level of talent attraction and training.
The Center has set up an outstanding talent team, including 252 fixed researchers, 250 graduate students, of which including 7 academicians, 1 from “Foreign Global Experts Program”, 4 from “Global Experts Program”, 8 from “Global Young Experts Program”, 15 Chief Professors from “973 Project” and the national key special programs, also 7 national innovative groups.
The Center has obtained 142 national key R & D projects and other research projects, received new research funding of 495.4 million CNY, participated in 18 standard-settings, published 336 high level research papers, applied/granted more than 400 patents and obtained 21 national and provincial awards.
Through the transformation of innovative achievements to industries, the center helps to create output value of more than 3.1 billion.

Climate change, especially global warming has become concern for the international community and governments, which is not only a major environment problem closely related to the survival and development of the humanity, but also a hotspot and frontier in basic science research around the world. Human social and economic activities are so wide and intensive that they have exerted significant impacts on the global climate. In recent one hundred years, global warming was caused by greenhouse gases, mostly carbon dioxide. At the same time, high-intensive regional human activities, such as air pollution, land cover change, bring greater uncertainty in the understanding of regional and global climate change.
As an eastern coastal province, Jiangsu is characterized by intensive human activities and advanced economic development, whose socio-economic development is closely related to monsoon climate changes. On the one hand, as an industrial province, Jiangsu features high carbon emission intensity as well as a huge total amount, leading to serious air pollution and other environment problems. These problems call for energy conservation and emission reduction, and place high demands on the transformation of economic development mode and innovation in production processes. On the other hand, rapid urbanization and its construction is undergoing in Jiangsu Province, southern Jiangsu becoming a demonstration area for modernization in China. Frequent extreme precipitation caused by climate change has led to serious urban waterlogging in many cities of Jiangsu Province (such as Nanjing), resulting in serious losses of people’s life and property. To forecast and respond to disasters, especially to undertake city infrastructure improvement and planning, basic scientific research is in an urgent need. At the same time, as a major agricultural province, situated in the eastern monsoon region, Jiangsu features maximum interannual variability of precipitation. At the end of lower reaches of the Yangtze River, the province is also susceptible to precipitation in the Yangtze river basin, Natural disasters caused by climate change exert huge impacts on agricultural production in this region, thus responding to climate change is of the first importance.
In general, based on international frontier of the climate change, the Collaborative Innovation Center (Collaborative Innovation Center of Climate Change) meets major demand for national and local economic and social development, and focuses on issues about Asian monsoon climate system. The center brings different disciplines and different units together, carrying out research mechanism reform and improving the overall innovation capability. That’s how it gains in-depth knowledge of basic laws and key mechanism of the climate change and its related natural disasters in eastern China against the background of global warming. It works to improve numerical modeling and prediction for issues in question, offering new ways and methods to come up with scientific measures to orderly respond and adapt to the climate change. Though collaborative innovation, the center gathers and cultivates a number of top-notch teams and talents specialized in the climate change, contributing to rapid and sustainable development of the related disciplines.
According to its development plan during the period of 2013-2016, the Collaborative Innovation Center focuses on laws, mechanism and predictability of interdecadal variation of the Asian monsoon climate. The key scientific problem to be solved is relative contribution of the climate system's natural variability and regional human activities to climate change in China and the East Asia in 10-30 years.
Its main tasks include the following aspects:
Decadal oscillation of Ocean-Atmosphere-Land Coupled monsoon system
Human activities on the decadal change modulation of monsoon system
Predictability and prediction theory on decadal changes in monsoon system
Changes of monsoon climate and prediction and orderly adaptation to its impacts in the next 10-20 years.
In accordance with the basic principle of “demand-orientation, overall opening-up, deep integration and selective supporting” and the mode of “trinity system of talents, disciplines and research,” a collaborative innovation system has come into being, which integrates theoretical research, policy design and practical operation. This system works on the basis of the advantage disciplines of School of Economics and School of Management, Nanjing University, in cooperation with research strength of School of Management and Engineering, Nanjing University, the Research Office of the Jiangsu Provincial Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC), Jiangsu Provincial Academy of Social Sciences, and People’s Government of Kunshan, Jiangsu Province. By doing so, it incorporates resources of Nanjing University, the Research Office of the Jiangsu Provincial CPC Committee, Jiangsu Provincial Academy of Social Sciences, and People’s Government of Kunshan. Therefore, it will meet the innovative demand of Jiangsu Province and lead the nation in the field of innovation.
The economic and social development of Jiangsu Province has entered a critical period of economic transition and management transformation. Faced with great changes of resource endowment, competitive environment and values of the public of Jiangsu province, we have to carry out timely reforms on the original economic development mode and managerial patterns in order to maintain comprehensive and coordinated economic and social development. In recent years, Jiangsu Province has put forward the goal of building all-round well-off society all over the province, with Southern Jiangsu taking the lead in basically achieving modernization. This goal is not only a blueprint for the future of the province, but also defined the direction for the province’s economic and social development. To achieve this goal, the essence is to accelerate economic transition and management transformation.
Modernization is an advanced stage and a development trend of human society. A modernized society is characterized by economic prosperity, common affluence, social harmony, ecological soundness and political civilization, and it features comprehensive and coordinated economic and social development, with emphasis on the development and well-being of its people. Within the process of modernization, the existing problems mainly include insufficient innovative capacity, lopsided emphasis on industrial structure, excessive discrepancy in growth between urban and rural areas, and between different regions, lagging development of social undertakings, and tough task of equalizing public services. In addition, the ecological environment and the market economy system are badly in need of improvement. It is of great importance to probe deeply into the inherent rules and mechanisms of economic and social development, to explore the path to economic transition and management transformation, as well as to design effective policies that promote the all-round economic and social development of Jiangsu Province.
Concentrating on major theoretical and practical issues of economic transition and management transformation in the modernization process of Jiangsu Province, the collaborative innovation center will establish innovative platforms for “research on basic theories and evaluation of regional modernization,” “research on innovation-driven development,” “research on modern industrial system,” and “research on economic internationalization.” The center will develop with all its strength a high-end think tank integrating personnel training, scientific research, social services and cultural inheritance and innovation, and to take the lead in academic and theoretical innovation both at home and abroad.
The platform of research on basic theories and evaluation of regional modernization is set up to solve the basic theoretical problems of economic transition and management transformation in Jiangsu’s modernization, to lay a theoretical foundation for subsequent theme-based applied research of other platforms, to evaluate regional modernization, and to monitor the modernization levels of cities and counties in Jiangsu Province.
Other platforms are for theme-based applied research. They were set up to meet the actual needs of Jiangsu and focus on the research of the practice of Jiangsu’s economic development, that is, on the implementation of the country’s “Construction Plan for the Modernization Demonstration Zone in Southern Jiangsu.” To promote economic and social transformation, Jiangsu Province has put forth “Six Stresses” and “Eight Projects.” The “Six Stresses” mainly include “stressing the acceleration of the transformation of methods of economic development,” “stressing the strengthening of self-initiated innovation,” and “stressing the strengthening of cultural construction.” The “Eight Projects” mainly include the project of transformation and upgrading, the project of scientific and technological innovation, the project of agricultural modernization, the project of cultural construction, the project of people’s happiness and livelihood, and the project of ecological civilization construction. The “Construction Plan for the Modernization Demonstration Zone in Southern Jiangsu” stipulates that Southern Jiangsu be constructed into a “demonstration zone of self-initiated innovation,” a “zone of clustering modern industries,” a “leading zone of opening-up and cooperation,” an “advanced zone of integrated urban-rural development,” and an “affluent and cultural zone of high habitability.” The platforms of the center are aimed at exploring the rules and determinants of economic transition and management transformation, to put forward scientific measures and proposals and to make high-level research achievements with theoretical and practical values through the combination of theory with practice.
The Collaborative Innovation Center of Novel Software Technology and Industrialization was established in December 2012. In April 2014, it was approved by the Educational Department of Jiangsu Province as a provincial-level collaborative innovation center in university and was given a four-year grant of 20 million yuan RMB. Focusing on meeting the major needs of Jiangsu’s software industry development, the center explores a system of collaborative innovation and research, develops long-term mechanisms of cooperation in production, education and research, and offers a public service platform that supports the promotion of innovation capacity of the software industry. The coordinated research focuses on the layout of forward-looking technology, key technology, and the enhancement of the quality of target products. It realizes open-ended aggregation of innovation resources, multi-discipline integration of talents cultivation, and multiple team collaboration and technological integration in product development. It strives to promote the innovation capacity of both universities and corporations and to push ahead with sustainable.
The center has integrated the best resources from universities and corporations in Jiangsu Province, including Nanjing University, Southeast University, Nanjing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Soochow University, Nanjing Research Institute of Electronic Engineering (ENRIEE), Linkage Group Corporation, NARI Technology Co., Ltd., Nanjing LES Information Technology Co., Ltd. Focus Technology Co., Ltd., and Datcent Technology Co., Ltd. The center has integrated the platforms of State Key Laboratories, Chinese National Engineering Research Center, the Ministry-of-Education Key Laboratories, Key Laboratories of Jiangsu Province and Key Laboratories of Science and Technology for National Defense. It is now supporting over 40 enterprises, including software enterprises ranking among the top 10 in China, key state software enterprises, key high-tech enterprises of the National Torch Program and key enterprises in software bases supported by the National Torch Program.
The center has made achievements in its exploration of a number of important issues such as how to overcome the barriers between “science and technology,” between “technology and industry” and between “crossover and collaboration,” how to realize the integration of “research, talents and disciplines” as well as “technology, talents and products,” and how to implement the development mode of “dual structure of disciplinary development,” “one school, two systems” and “multiple cultivating modes.” With the work of the center, six new “enterprise research institutes” came into being whereby universities work closely with enterprises, forming a network of collaborative innovation, combining core technology of university institutes with product development, upgrading and application by software enterprises and application units.
The center has undertaken over 200 projects commissioned by the state and enterprises, published over 200 high-quality academic papers, and won 2 national-level and 11 provincial- and ministerial-level science and technology awards. It has presided 17 national and international academic conferences, held nearly 100 academic industrial forums, applied for over 400 patents for invention and over 300 software copyrights and invented over 10 new and high-tech products. It also provides consultancy services on information construction strategies and planning for provincial and municipal governments and for electric power and telecom industries, bringing significant economic and social benefits.
The Collaborative Innovation Center for Chinese Literature and East Asian Civilization, Nanjing University, was set up in January 2013. In 2014, it was listed as one of the 2011 Collaborative Innovation Projects in Jiangsu Province. The center relies on the disciplines of Chinese language and literature at Nanjing University and works in cooperation with the Institute of Literature and the Institute of Foreign Literature of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, Taiwan University, Kyoto University (Japan) and the University of Tokyo (Japan), Korea University (Korea) and Harvard University (USA). By integrating research energies on Chinese classics in East Asia and overseas Chinese literature studies, the center strives to make academic achievements, cultivate high-quality talent for scientific research, cultural inheritance and innovation, and provide experience for international collaborative innovation in humanities.
The main tasks of the center are to study the mutual influence and shared achievements in civilization and cultural spirit concerning Chinese literature and East Asian civilization during ancient and modern times, so as to expand research on the current issues with regard to national cultural strategies; to establish a new document system through arrangement, research and explanation of Chinese classics in East Asia, which will provide a good theoretical understanding of modes and methods with respect to the production of knowledge, systems of discourse and methodology in Chinese and East Asian humanities, thus serving the needs of China’s peaceful rise and cultural revitalization. In addition, the center unites the government, manufacturers, universities, institutions, and users; and, by integrating various resources, it serves the needs of the social and cultural development of Jiangsu Province.
Since its establishment, the center has played a leading role in research on Chinese classics in East Asia and on Chinese literature in the world, serving academic circles and society with excellence. In 2014, it obtained one major bidding project of national philosophy and social science (“Research on Chinese literature and Chinese culture”) and two key projects (“Literature review and research on written literature in China and North Korea” and “Collection of Chinese character rhymes handed down in Korea”). The center’s remarkable achievements, the block-printed edition of the collection of ancient Chinese classics in Japan and the collection of women’s poetry of the Korean Era, have received favorable comments in literary circles of East Asia and were awarded the second and third prizes of Ministry-of-Education Humanities and Social Sciences Research Achievement Award for Colleges and Universities. In 2015, in collaboration with several key media and film institutions at home, the center set up the “Center for Asian Film, Television and Media Study (CAFTMS),” which is the first strategic research center of its kind in the context of the digital environment. The center is committed to developing a three-in-one platform of producing, studying and research which integrates universities, media and film institutions and serves as a think tank for media industry.
