Disciplines


Nanjing University has a big group of competitive disciplines with renowned faculty. Its influence has been increasing internationally.


In the third round of the review of first-level disciplines by the Degree Center of the Ministry of Education in 2002, the university had:

  • 3 first-level disciplines ranked the first in the country

  • 9 first-level disciplines ranked the third

  • 16 first-level disciplines ranked the fifth


By the end of December 2014, the university had 12 disciplines entered the top 1% of the ESI globally, among which chemistry and material science were among the first 100 best disciplines in the world.


At present, the university has:

  • 40 first-level disciplines that are authorized to confer doctoral degrees

  • 1 professional discipline that is authorized to confer doctoral degrees

  • 23 professional discipline that is authorized to confer master’s degrees

  • 8 first-level disciplines that are state key disciplines

  • 13 second-level disciplines that are state key disciplines

  • 6 disciplines that are state key developing disciplines

  • 19 disciplines that are supported by the first-phase program of the construction of competitive disciplines of Jiangsu’s colleges and universities

  • 18 first-level disciplines that are Jiangsu provincial key disciplines


Labs and Centers


With laboratories and research centers, the university has:

  • 1 state laboratory (under construction)

  • 7 state key laboratories

  • 8 Ministry-of-Education key laboratories

  • 8 Jiangsu provincial key laboratories

  • 1 national engineering technology research center

  • 14 engineering centers at the provincial/ministerial level

  • 13 talents nurturing bases of national basic disciplines

  • 1 national talents nurturing base for life sciences and technology

  • 4 Ministry-of-Education key research centers of humanities and social sciences

  • about 100 interdisciplinary research centers


All these disciplines and research platforms facilitate the graduate education at Nanjing University.
