Introduction of the Choir



Nanjing University Student Choir Group was founded in 1999, and its predecessor was the Sunshine Choir of Nanjing University. It is affiliated with the Nanjing University Committee of the Communist Youth League and one of the mainstays of the university’s student music groups along with the Symphony Orchestra and the Traditional Instruments Orchestra of Nanjing University.



The choir sings popular songs people are familiar with such as MEMORY, selections from musicals, Chinese traditional songs with ethnic flavors, and of course, foreign songs and operas. Since its establishment, the choir has been under the leadership of Chen Xiaoyan, has been active in many large-scale musical gatherings and has won many prizes in competitions.

Chen Xiaoyan


Chen Xiaoyao, associate professor, born in Wuxi, Jiangsu, in 1973, graduated with a BA in 1995 from the Music Department of Nanjing Normal University. In the same year, she started to work at the Center of Cultural and Art Education, Nanjing University. In May 2010, she started to work with the Nanjing University Committee of the Youth League. She offers four elective undergraduate courses each semester.


Over the past ten years, Chen has led the Nanjing University Student Choir to win many awards in vocal competitions sponsored by the Ministry of Education, including many first and second prizes at the national level and champions at the provincial level.


Chen herself has been many times awarded the title of “The Outstanding Instructor” jointly by the Publicity Department of CPC’s Central Committee, the Ministry of Culture, the Ministry of Education, the Central Committee of the Communist Youth League,the State Administration of Radio, Film and Television, and Jiangsu Provincial Education Department. The original works “Wu Yun Han Feng Jasmine” and “The Mark of Youth,” which Chen directed, were awarded the National Outstanding Creation Award and the Outstanding Creation Award, respectively, by the Ministry of Education and the Provincial Education Department. Chen has taken the solo part in many large-scale performances at the national, provincial and university levels; has published academic papers in China’s core journals. She has also been many times awarded the title of the “Advanced Individual” by the Provincial Education Department and the provincial committee of China Democratic League.
