The opening ceremony for Nanjing University’s Center for Research and Education in Biological Evolution and Environmental Sciences (hereinafter the center) was held on February 19 in the School of Earth Sciences and Engineering.
Professor Chen Jun, president of Nanjing University, Yang Qun, director of Nanjing Institute of Geology and Palaeonotology, Zhou Zhonghe, director of the Institute of Vertebrate Paleontology and Paleoanthropology, attended the ceremony and jointly unveiled the plaque of the center.
Unveiling the plaque
The center is a research institution jointly set up and managed by Nanjing University, Nanjing Institute of Geology and Palaeonotology, and Institute of Vertebrate Paleontology and Paleoanthropology. It is also the first in China that combines research and education.
The center aims to study key scientific issues such as the relationship between life evolution in geological history and environment changes and to create a new way of training geoscience scholars.
To forge an international talent training base and an open high-level research institution, the center will combine advance scientific research and talent training and promote talent cultivation with sophisticated scientific research.
At present, 12 scientists from these two institutes have been appointed professors at the center, and they will participate in talent training, course design and scientific research.
Shen Shuzhong, academician of Nanjing Institute of Geology and Palaeonotology, is director of the center.
After the opening ceremony, the center held its first enlarged meeting of its academic board. The board members and some experts had a heated discussion on major tasks, developing direction and talent cultivation of the center.
