About the Art Institute of Nanjing University


The Art Institute of Nanjing University is devoted to excellence in teaching, learning, and research in the arts. Its aim is to contribute to establishing Nanjing University as one of the top universities at a global level.


The Institute, which is based in the Gulou district in the center of Nanjing and comprises 18 facilities, offers four post-graduate degrees and has an enrollment of over 40 graduate students.  


History


Founded in 1902, Nanjing University is one of the oldest and most prestigious institutions of higher education in China. As its motto reminds us -- 'Sincerity with Aspiration, Perseverance and Integrity' -- this university inspires in its graduates a desire of constantly striving for educational and academic excellence.


Historically among the earliest departments of Nanjing University, the Department of Art Studies and Education has a long tradition at Nanjing University. Among its graduates, there are many famous artists such as Xu Beihong (徐悲鸿), Zhang Daqian (张大千), Chen Zhifo (陈之佛), as well as important art theorists and art educators including Zong Baihua (宗白华) and Tang Guizhang (唐圭璋). These pioneers have established a solid foundation for the development of art education in Modern China. For the faculty of the Art Institute of Nanjing University, they are a constant inspiration to carry on with this tradition and to explore new models of art education in contemporary China.


Faculty


Formerly known as the Center (for) Art Education. In 2013, the Institute was expanded in order to become an independent school at Nanjing University. It now includes three centers: the Center (for) of Art History, the Center (for) of Art Education, and Center (for) of Cultural Creativity. Its faculty includes 5 full Professors, that is, Zhou Xian, Kang Er, Tong Qiang, Zhao Kuiying and Huang Zhengming, 8 Associate Professors, 4 Lecturers. 2 administrators constitute its non-academic staff.


Academic Mission


Since its establishment as a separate institution in 2013, the Art Institute of Nanjing University has been training outstanding young scholars in art history and theory through its excellent graduate programs focusing on the three key areas: Art Theory and History (M.A. and Ph.D.), Art Education, and Cultural Creativity. The Institute also provides general courses in the studies of the arts directed to undergraduate students from all the schools and campuses of Nanjing University. Per semester, more than 30 courses including general courses, seminars, innovative, and entrepreneurial courses are offered. Every year, the enrollment in the course offered by the Art Institute exceeds 10,000 students.


The Art Institute of Nanjing University also invites Ph.D. holders who are interested in working in Nanjing, PR China, to join its team work as Postdoctoral Fellows. Job announcements (in English) are released in the website.


The Center of Art Education is the Base of National Colleges for Student’s Cultural Education. As such, it plays a leading role in exploring new models of art education in universities. With that aim in mind, the Center regularly organizes important artistic events of all sorts as well as series of guest lectures.


The Institute has been collaborating with distinguished scholars and famous universities for what pertains to both research and teaching. Exchanges have not been limited to scholars, but have also interested students. The Institute welcomes scholars and students who woudd like to work and study in China for long-term or short-term visits to contact us.


Research


The Art Institute includes three research centers: The Center for Art Theory and History, the Center for Art Education, and the Center for Cultural Creativity. The research agenda of the Center of Art Theory and History focuses on the studies of Western and Chinese art theories histories of art. At the Center of Art Education, researchers explore both the theoretical and practical dimensions of art education. Research interests at the Center (for) of Cultural Creativity -- the youngest among the three – follow from recent developments in Cultural and Media studies, tackling issues related to  cultural policy, social models of innovation, and creative industries.   


Art Institute in the Community


The Art Institute is devoted to service the communities in Nanjing and Chinese society. For its contribution in training generations of art professionals in the Jiangsu Province, the Institute was elected as the Base for Art Teachers Education in the Jiangsu Province as well as the Base of Professional Continuing Education. Meanwhile, the Institute also functions as a think-tank helping local governments, companies, and the public organizations in developing innovative progams and solving current issues.
