Dr. Chen Jun, born in November 1954 in Yangzhou, Jiangsu Province, started to work in 1973 and in 1980, graduated from Geology Department, Nanjing University, with a major in geochemistry. In 1984, he joined the Communist Party of China (CPC). In 1985, he obtained his Ph.D. in mineralogy and upon graduation, joined the mineralogy faculty of Nanjing University. In 1988, he conducted post-doctoral research at the department of geology, Imperial College London, the University of London. In 1992, he was promoted to professorship by the Department of Earth Sciences, Nanjing University. In the years that followed, he held various positions such as dean of the Department of Earth Sciences, vice president of Nanjing University, member of the standing committee of the CPC Nanjing University Committee, and executive vice president. In May 2006, he was appointed president of Nanjing University. He received honorary doctorate degrees from the University of Southampton in 2009 and from the University of York in 2012, and he became an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in 2013. In April 2017, he was appointed vice chancellor and president of Nanjing University, and he was a deputy to the 11th and 12th National People’s Congress.   


Dr. Chen is now a member of the Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council, a member of the 7th Disciplinary Appraisal Group, convener of the geography group, a member of the 6th Science and Technology Committee of the Ministry of Education, director of the Geology Teaching Steering Committee of the Ministry of Education, chairman of the 9th Committee of Jiangsu Provincial Association for Science and Technology.   


Dr. Chen has been engaged in teaching and research of geochemistry. He has taken charge of and completed scientific research projects supported by the Outstanding Youth Fund of the National Natural Science Foundation of China, Science Fund for Creative Research Groups of the National Natural Science Foundation of China, Vital Fund of the National Natural Science Foundation of China, and secondary 973 projects supported by the Ministry of Science and Technology. He has published over 200 papers and 4 monographs, has been awarded 1 second prize of China's State Natural Science Award, 1 grand prize of the National Teaching Achievement Award for Higher Education and 5 Science and Technology Achievement Awards by the Ministry of Education.
