School of Engineering and Applied Sciences


In December 2009, the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences (CEAS) was founded with faculty members from the Department of Materials Science and Engineering, which was originally established in 1993 by Dr. Min Naiben, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. Dr. Zhu Shining, also an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, acted as the interim Dean of CEAS, while conducting a world-wide search for a dean who could lead CEAS towards a world-class college with its research and education focusing on developing cutting-edge technologies and engineering solutions to tackle major societal challenges.

  

In May 2011, Dr. Nie Shuming, a world-renowned scholar from Emory University and Georgia Institute of Technology with broad experience both in USA and China, became the International Dean of CEAS. Selected by Nanjing University as a test bed to pioneer the university’s internationalization initiative, CEAS is taking a systematic approach in its efforts towards building a world-class college. Internationalization is being implemented in every facet of the college (education, research, administration, faculty recruiting/assessment, and infrastructure), and virtually every member of the college (administrators, faculty, staff, students) is participating.

  

CEAS has assembled an administrative team consisting of both world-renowned scholars from developed countries and China. The current Secretary of the Party Committee is Mr. Zang Wencheng. Prof. Lu Yan-qing, a Changjiang distinguished professor and OSA fellow serves as the executive dean of the college.

  

CEAS focuses on four cutting-edge engineering disciplines and national strategic priorities, with each focus corresponding to an academic department, namely materials science and engineering, quantum electronics and optical engineering, biomedical engineering, and energy science and engineering. Selected interdisciplinary centers are also being established to promote cross-disciplinary collaboration, translation, and commercialization.  

  

A new tenure-track system is being implemented for faculty recruiting, evaluation and promotion. Over the recent years, nearly 30 junior faculty members have been recruited from the US, UK, Europe, and Japan into the tenure-track system, primarily through the prestigious “National Thousand Global Young Talents” program.

  

The curriculum of each department of CEAS offers a wide selection of courses taught by world-class faculty scholars. The medium of instruction for many courses (target percentage: 50%-80% in five years) is being converted to English. High quality course work is also combined with extracurricular activities, many of which are international such as an international summer camp of engineering design in collaboration with the Ohio State University.

  

Faculty members of the CEAS conduct cutting-edge research, and regularly publish in high profile scholarly journals such as Science, Nature, Physical Review Letters, Advanced Materials, JACS, Angewandte Chemie, and Nano Letters.

  

International research collaborations are beginning to form via joint research projects and international research laboratories. Finally, a new 60,000 m2 world-class building for research and education is currently under construction to house the academic departments and research centers, embodying CEAS’s global vision and forward-looking plan.

  

CEAS is now striving to become a world-class college in the near future. With generous support and help from our friends in China and abroad, it will produce not only world-class knowledge and technologies, but nurture students and scholars with global visions and competence who can meet the major challenges and opportunities posed by an increasingly globalized society. It is believed that the CEAS will play leadership roles in shaping the future of China and the rest of the world.


Department of Materials Science and Engineering


Materials Science and Engineering (MSE) is a scientific discipline integrating fundamental material knowledge, engineering principle and manufacture process to create new materials, microscopic devices and systems for improving human life. The mission of the department is to achieve breakthroughs in material science and engineering for cutting-edge technologies, including informatics, energy storage and converting as well as precision medicine.

  

Since founded in 1993, the MSE department has distinguished itself through faculty leadership in national research communities and close partnerships with industry and the government. Over the past three years, more than 80 research projects (about 190 million yuan RMB) have been granted from national funding bodies, including 9 from the State Key Program for Basic Research of China, 3 from the National 863 Projects. The faculty has published more than 500 research papers in peer-reviewed journals. It has been granted 40 Chinese patents and 3 international patents with 65 more patents pending.

  

The department offers BS, MS and Ph.D. degrees in Materials Science and Engineering. Among them, materials physics and chemistry have been listed among the National Key Subjects.

  

The department is dedicated to developing the next generation’s leaders in materials science and engineering, to discover and apply material breakthroughs for improving human life. The faculty is trying its best to make the department into one of the most important international bases for research and education on advanced functional materials, and its research will provide essential technique support for national material research.

Currently the MSE department enrolls about 80 BS, 75 MS and 25 Ph.D. students every year.

  

Department of Quantum Electronics and Optical Engineering


Established in 2010, the Department of Quantum Electronics and Optical Engineering now has 15 professors, 8 associate professors, 1 lecturer, and 2 senior engineers. This faculty includes 1 academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, 1 member of the “One-thousand Talents Plan,” 3 OSA Fellows, 6 members of the “Youth One-thousand Talents Plan,” and 1 Changjiang Scholar with distinguished professorship.

  

Research directions of the department cover a wide range of areas, including (but not limited to) quantum information, all-solid-state lasers, optical sensors and communications, micro/nano-photonics, bio-photonics, photovoltaic solar cell, and so on.

  

The department has built extensive communications and collaboration with many leading high-tech companies and oversea universities. It is also the base of three optics related students’ international societies, that is, the NJU student chapters of OSA, SPIE and IEEE Photonics Society.

Education


Undergraduate program

The undergraduate program, which leads to a Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering, concentrates on optoelectronic information science and engineering, and it has an innovative curriculum integrating physics, materials, electronics as well as modern optical science and technology courses. The program introduces students to front-line research topics in a modular fashion, allowing for a highly personalized course schedule that fits students’ individual interests.  

  

Graduate program

The postgraduate programs in optical engineering include a Master in Engineering program and a Doctor of Philosophy program. The graduate students are trained in a leading research infrastructure, supervised by top engineers and scientists.

  

Department of Biomedical Engineering

 

Biomedical Engineering (BME) integrates engineering principles and biomedical knowledge to solve biomedical problems and develop innovative technologies for diseases diagnosis, treatment and prevention, thus improving the quality of human life.

           

The Department of Biomedical Engineering was established in October 2011. Over the last 5 years, it has grown rapidly, both in the number of people and the amount of research funding. It has made significant progress in undergraduate/graduate education, fundamental research, as well as clinical translation.

Education


Undergraduate program

The BME undergraduate program leading to a Bachelor’s in Engineering has a curriculum integrating mathematics, physics, chemistry as well as life science and basic medicine courses. The program introduces students to advanced research in a modular fashion for a training that is personalized to individual students.

  

Graduate program

Students in the BME graduate program are supervised by leading engineers and scientists in the fields. This three-year program leads to a Master in Engineering Degree.

  

Department of Energy Science and Engineering

            

The department of Energy Science and Engineering (DESE), established in July2012, is aimed at developing multidisciplinary research on scientific and engineering applications in new energy development. At present, there are several research fields in DESE:

  • Advanced Secondary Battery Technology;

  • Clusters and Micro-Nano Energy Devices;

  • Solar Utilization Technology;

  • Transformation and Utilization of Thermal Energy;

  • Solar Hydrogen Production;

  • Technology of Fuel Cell;

  • Utilization of Biomass Energy and Nuclear Energy.

  

DESE combines several disciplines that are traditionally strong in Nanjing University, including materials and microelectronics, physics, and chemistry. The department strives to become a priority discipline at the university, one of the most important bases for talents training and R&D in the field of energy, generalizing especially advanced secondary battery technology and new energy in China and promoting China’s advances in these fields internationally.

  

The faculty includes 8 professors, 4 associate professors. From 2012 on, DESE has been supported by the Chinese government through several sources:
