School of Electronic Science and Engineering

The School of Electronic Science and Engineering (SESE) traces its history back to the radiophysics and semi-conductor physics programs founded at Nanjing University in the 1950s. For the last few years, the university has made efforts to develop its academic disciplines and enhance its strength in fields of high and new technology and engineering and in 2009, developed the disciplines of electronic science and technology and information and communication engineering into the School of Electronic Science and Engineering, with the help of No. 14 and No.50 Research Institutes of China Electronics Technology Group Corporation.

SESE is the university’s important base for talent cultivation and scientific research with support by by Project 211 and Project 985. It consists of four departments, namely, electronic engineering, microelectronics and optoelectronics, information electronics, and communication engineering. The four departments cover two “first-level disciplines” (Electronic Science and Technology, and Information and Communication Engineering). The school has two National Key Disciplines: Microelectronics and Solid State Electronics, and Radiophysics.

The school boasts of a strong and experienced faculty of 149 members, of whom, 46 are professors, 41 associate professors, and 10 senior engineers. Two of its professors are Academicians of Chinese Academy of Sciences, 3 Academicians of Chinese Academy of Engineering5 scholars on the Recruitment Program of Global Experts, 2 Chief Scientists for the 973 Program, 5 distinguished professors on the Changjiang Scholar Program, 6 recipients of the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scientists, and 10 scholars on the Program for New Century Excellent Talents in University.

Oriented toward the foremost frontier in science and technology and the critical needs of China’s development, the school has undertaken many national scientific and technological research projects, such as the National Program on Key Basic Research Project (973 Program), the National High-Tech R&D Program of China (863 Program), and projects funded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China. It has also undertaken R&D programs from the departments of the national department, provincial government, local governments, and major high-tech enterprises. Through these programs, the school has greatly contributed to the social and economic development of China.

The school has a number of research laboratories and research institutions, such as the Jiangsu Province Key Laboratory of Functional Materials for Information Optoelectronics, the National Defense Key Laboratory for Electromagnetic wave manipulation and application, and the Jiangsu Provincial Engineering Center of Semiconductor Energy-Saving Technology. It has also participated in the preparation for the setting-up of the Nanjing National Laboratory of Microstructures. With the support of these laboratories and research institutions, the school has made remarkable achievements in the field of electronic information technology.

In line with the general principle of engineering education, the school endeavors to create a positive atmosphere for engineering studies. Coordinating the dual focuses of disciplinary development and social service, the school aims at the most advanced objectives in its disciplinary fields and actively participate in the national and local innovations so as to achieve the goal of building first-class disciplines and fostering outstanding innovative students with an excellent team of faculty and staff.
