In his opening speech, Zhang Yibin said, the birth of Marxism was a great event of epoch-making significance in human history. Under the guidance of Marxism, he said, the Communist Party of China has successfully led the Chinese people in achieving great leaps from standing up as a nation to enriching themselves and then to making China a stronger nation.
The commemoration of Marx’s birth, said Zheng, is to remind people of Marx’s great, life-long aspiration for the liberation of humanity; to demonstrate Marxism’s distinctive theoretical and practical features of making progress with the time; to adhere to developing socialism with Chinese characteristics; and to explore new development of Marxism in the 21st century.
Nanjing University has made many theoretical achievements in the study of the history of Marxist philosophy, Marxist political economics, Sinicization of Marxism and Marxism abroad, he said. With its academic characteristics and influence, it has become one of the major centers for Marxist research in the international community.
In the new era, Zheng said, the university will continue to adhere to the principle of “being based on document research, tracking the development on the frontier, broadening academic exchange, highlighting problem-oriented thinking, and fostering ideological innovation.” It will raise its academic standing, foster its social service capacity and make contributions to developing the Marxism of contemporary China and of the 21st century.
Zhang Yibin reiterated that under the guidance of Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era, socialism with Chinese characteristics will bring a bright future for socialism in the 21st century and Marxism will shine brightly both in modern China and in the entire world.
